"It is our biggest victory and we are delighted about it," said Robert Thame, the manager of Ali Albwardy to Gulf News from West Sussex after Dubai won the Polo Gold Cup beating Los Tamaraos 15-8 at Cowdray Park yesterday.

"The victory is equal to winning the Derby and we are delighted," added Thame after his team produced a splendid display in the Veuve Clicquot Polo Gold Cup final.

Thame, who has been the manager of Albwardy for the last seven years while praising the Dubai team said: "We have worked hard all winter for the event and it is very pleasing."
The Dubai team lifted the gold cup in one of the most historic venues: the Cowdray Park is where the late Viscount Cowdray revived polo as a national sport after the war.

For Dubai the win is creditable as some of the finest polo teams from all over the world participated in the event.

"Dubai team has been performing well and this is our third triumph. We won the Warwickshire Cup and the Indian Empire shield earlier," said Thame.

The Warwickshire Cup was won by Dubai team on July 1 at Cirencester Park. The Cup is one of England's oldest high-goal trophy.

Dubai defeated CS Brooks Foxcote 15-11 in a match which was hailed as a clash of the titans of Polo. Dubai had won the Indian Empire Challenge shield in June at Ahmibah Farm. These two victories made them favourites for the Gold Cup.

The Clicquot Gold Cup commenced from June 30 and the final of the event is seen as one of the highlights of the British polo season.

"The victory has been great. We plan to practice during winter in Dubai and then return to England. We are now aiming to win the Queen's Cup next year. The event was cancelled this year due to the foot and mouth disease," said Thame.

In the semi-finals, held on Lawns No 1 ground on June 19, Dubai defeated Cowdray Park 15-7 while Los Tamaraos had defeated CS Brooks Foxcote by exactly by the same score.
The Dubai team was represented by A.S. Albwardy, B. Castagnola, A. Cambiaso and R. Pemble.
