Dubai: Just three hours after reduced speed limits came into force on Dubai’s two main highways, a woman driving a Jeep crashed her vehicle into the back of a truck that stopped on the roadside on Sunday, Gulf News learnt.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of Traffic Department of Dubai Police, told Gulf News that the accident happened at 3am on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road near the Mirdif City Centre bridge.
Al Mazroui said that the Egyptian woman suffered serious injuries.
“She was driving a Jeep when she hit the back of the truck and suffered serious injuries. The truck was parked on the side of the road just two minutes before the accident due to a glitch in the tyre, according to the truck’s driver testimony,” Brigadier Al Mazroui said.
The woman is currently recovering in the hospital. “This is the first serious traffic accident after reducing speed limits on the two roads,” Brigadier Al Mazroui added.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the General HQ of Dubai Police have reduced speed limits on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road as part of efforts to curb traffic accidents and enhance the safety of road users.
The RTA and Dubai Police are coordinating several measures to maintain the safety of road users during the implementation of the project.
These include changing the speed limit to 110km/h instead of 120km/h and changing the directional and awareness signage on these roads.
