An Indian artist feels that art can serve society through depiction of its conditions.
Vasudevan Namboodiri, veteran illustrator and sculptor from Kerala, told Gulf News yesterday that as an artist, he has a special interest in social issues and tries to reflect them through his lines and shapes.
Namboodiri, who is currently in the UAE, was the chief guest yesterday at the Essence Art Training Camp, which is being held at the Emirates National School in Sharjah and concludes on August 23.
Namboodiri contended that artists have a duty towards their society and that their works must convey a message.
He observed that the artist often draws big inspiration from the concerns and ambitious of ordinary people and attempts to portray them through art.
Samaran Tharayil, President of Essence, the UAE Chapter of Natika S.N. College Alumni and organiser of the art camp, noted that all 70 children from KG to grade 12, who took part in this camp, had a great opportunity to engage in a free drawing session in the presence of this eminent artist to benefit from his experience.
Namboodiri has a unique style in illustrations and sculpture that speak of his high talent, said Tharayil.
He added: "We are keen on developing students' artistic skills and provide every possible help to achieve that. Hosting prominent artists like Namb-oodiri is a major step in that direction."
This artist has always been close to the people and tried to address social issues through his works. He is now in the process of making his own illustrated autobiography, Tharayil told.
Meanwhile, Namboodiri said the signs of modern life and technology featured in various aspects of life in the UAE have grabbed his attention. He is enjoying his stay in this beautiful country, which represents his first trip aboard.
