The setting up of seven "business groups" from leading sectors of the emirate's economy was yesterday announced by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Existing bodies, previously set up by the chamber and representing, for example, electronics, textiles and readymade garments, gold, jewellery and watches; and shipping and clearing agents - will be integrated into the structure of the new "business groups", said Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, chamber president.
Announcing a major reorganisation of the chamber, Al Tayer said the near-future aim is to have about 15-18 business groups representing all segments of the local economy.
"Applications for additional business groups will also be accepted in the near future. Members interested in registering for any of the planned new business groups can file their applications by visiting www.dcci.gov.ae ,he pointed out.
The chamber is quick off the mark following the announcement - it is holding its first open meeting with members from the foodstuffs trading sector on October 8, followed by another with the land transport sector on October 12, with pharmaceuticals, healthcare and hospital equipment sector on November 2, with building materials trading and manufacturing sector on November 3, with the printing and publishing sector on November 10, with food and beverages processing sector on November 12 and with the exhibitions and conferences sector on November 17.
"Our duty and our responsibility is to be the voice of the business community," Al Tayer declared.
He said helping to create additional dedicated business groups to represent leading industry sectors in Dubai is now a top priority.
