I have dark marks on my face (pimple scars) I am using Retino tube medicine advised by the doctor for the last three months. Yet, there is no improvement and I am fed-up with these marks on my face. They are on both cheeks and even on my forehead there are a few marks.

Dr David Russell: Perhaps your skin is not responding to the Retinol treatment. Ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative such as Furfuryladenine lotion. This is an alternative which is safe for darker skin types and sensitive skin. However, this treatment will take time to work, so try not to be impatient.

For the past couple of weeks, I have been experiencing pimples on my shoulders – and only in this particular area. I have pretty good skin otherwise so I'm wondering what this is all about. Also, it stops me wearing sleeveless blouses and dresses. What should I do about this problem if it persists?
Amanda, 29

This problem could be owing to a build up of dead skin cells and sebum (the natural oil of the skin). Make sure you exfoliate this area with a body exfoliant and a loofah or body brush. Do not pick or squeeze any of these pimples as it could cause scarring. If these pimples do not clear up quickly consult a dermatologist who will be able to prescribe creams or lotions to deal with this.

Four months back, I experienced some allergy on my face. I avoided visiting the doctor and instead applied some creams. However, it started getting worse and spread from under my chin to my forehead, affecting even my eyebrows. It was then I visited a doctor, and he advised me not to use aftershave and soap, and to use a medicated soap, instead. Gradually, it came to an end but now the scars still exist and small pores are still there. I even gave up shaving every day and used a trimmer instead to keep a very light beard.
Could you advise me as to a cream I could use to get rid of these small pores? Can I shave daily?

Bhafaat Ali, 28

This problem is very difficult to analyse without actually seeing the skin. It would appear that you have had an allergic reaction to the cream you have been using which has left some scarring. You need to consult a dermatologist who will be able to test you for common allergies.

In the meantime, do not use aftershave or soap as directed by your doctor. Instead, use a mild facial wash that does not contain perfume or colourants. There should be no problem with your shaving as long as you do not use fragranced shaving foam and aftershave.

I always have a problem with my hands and feet. The problem is I prespire tremendously in both cold and hot weather. It is so embarassing, especially when I meet people and they offer to shake my hand. It also gives me an uneasy and unclean feeling every time my hands and feet perspire.

Hyperidrosis in simple terms can be defined as overly active sweat glands stimulated by the nervous system.

There are many anti-sweat lotions available which can be applied to the hands much in the same way as normal anti-perspirants for the underarms. These products are often used by sports people who need to have good grip for their sport. You can purchase these easily from pharmacies or sports shops.

A more drastic solution offered in the U.S. is a minor surgery to the back in which the nerve responsible is removed. The most common side-effect – increased sweating in other parts of the body – is often mild and temporary.
