Dubai: A saleswoman told a court on Monday that she created a profile on a dating app and promoted sex after she became jobless and needed money to fly back home.

The 24-year-old Moroccan, who according to records is a saleswoman, was said to have walked into a police station and admitted that she had been staying illegally in Dubai and working as prostitute before she was arrested in March.

Prosecutors accused the 24-year-old woman of creating an account on Who’s Here [a smart phone app that is designed for dating and chatting] and promoting sexual services through that profile. She was also accused of consuming liquor.

When she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance, the suspect admitted that she had worked as prostitute because she needed the money to return to her country.

She contended before the presiding judge that her residency had expired and she had been staying in the country illegally.

The woman told the court that she had to work in the sex trade to make some money and that she had sex with several men whom she charged Dh1,500 to Dh2,000.

Prosecutors said that the woman set up a profile on a social media app through which she promoted prostitution and consumed alcohol.

Records said the woman used a fake name and posted some images on social media to lure clients for sex.

During Monday’s hearing, the presiding judge modified the accusation sheet and added the charge of prostitution.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to that charge.

A ruling in the case will be announced later this month.
