Safety violations lead to hefty fines for Dubai jet ski users
Dubai Police, in partnership with the Dubai Maritime Authority (DMA), have launched a rigorous inspection campaign targeting jet ski users. The operation resulted in 431 fines issued and the seizure of 41 jet skis for non-compliance with safety regulations.
Sheikh Dr Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, CEO of DMA, emphasised the importance of the initiative: "Our joint efforts highlight Dubai’s commitment to becoming a global benchmark for maritime safety. Ensuring a secure and sustainable environment for all sea users supports economic growth and strengthens Dubai’s position as a leading maritime hub."
He added that the safety of marine users remains paramount, with continuous improvements to regulatory frameworks and adoption of advanced technologies. Collaboration between regulatory and awareness bodies is vital to fostering responsibility and maintaining a safe maritime environment.
Brigadier Dr Hassan Suhail, Director of Ports Police Station, explained that the campaign aims to enhance maritime safety, reduce injuries caused by reckless behaviour, and crack down on violations to prevent dangerous practices. The presence of police patrols across marine zones also helps boost public confidence and security.
The campaign uncovered violations including expired jet ski licences, entry into restricted swimming zones and hotel beaches, non-adherence to permitted usage hours, failure to wear life jackets, underage operation, and overloading.
Operating with expired licence: Dh1,000
Not wearing life jackets or helmets: Dh1,000
Disturbing or harassing others: Dh2,000
Using jet skis outside designated areas: Dh1,000
Violations were recorded across several coastal locations in Dubai.
Brigadier Suhail reaffirmed the readiness of Dubai Police maritime patrols to safeguard navigation and swiftly respond to emergencies, with marine rescue units available round the clock.
Dubai Police and DMA jointly called on jet ski users to comply fully with maritime laws, ensure safety equipment is worn, conduct regular maintenance, respect speed limits of 5 to 7 nautical miles, and avoid approaching private or tourist vessels.
Users are also encouraged to monitor weather conditions before venturing out and to use the “Sail Safely” service on the Dubai Police smart app for emergency assistance. In urgent cases, the public should dial 999.
