Dubai: A teenager’s casual texting on the phone while driving has changed the life of a family forever.

With one son dead and the other battling for life, Jordanian Naser Mohammad Maghtheh, is shocked beyond disbelief.

His sons were out camping in Al Warqa with six Arab friends on Monday evening when a Nissan Patrol driven by an 18-year-old Emirati crashed into them. The horrific accident left four dead and as many injured.

“My boy was just 17 and was just about to start his first term at university. “Now he is dead because an irresponsible youngster was texting behind the wheel,” said Maghtheh, who works as a manager at Sharjah Aviation Services.

His other son is being treated for multiple fractures and serious head injuries at Rashid Hospital.

Maghteh said the second son is not aware about the fate of his sibling.

Vehicles destroyed

Police said the accident took place around 11pm on September 8 on the University Street before Al Warqa roundabout when the victims and his friends were taking out camping gear from two cars parked on the hard shoulder

The impact of the crash was so strong that both vehicles were completely wrecked.

Sources hinted the driver may have been under the influence of intoxicants. Maghtheh said he knew the other victims as well.

“They were all like my sons. They would come over our house, eat at our table and were inseparable. I had just finished the paperwork to have my youngest son start his university education. He was supposed to start only a week from now,” added Maghtheh, who had just returned from a two week family vacation in Amman.

The Emirati driver, who suffered minor injuries, is in police custody. “He was inattentive and driving at a very high speed,” said a police official. The accident is being investigated and will be referred to Traffic Prosecution.”
