Dubai: A gang of ten men were arrested for stealing four luxury vehicles worth Dh1.5 million in Dubai, police said on Wednesday.
Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said the Arab men were professionals and stole the Land Cruisers from Jebel Ali Port, and used a rented vehicle to transport them to a neighbouring emirate without leaving any evidence.
“We deployed a special team to solve the mysterious disappearance of the cars. We arrested the suspects and recovered the cars in 24 hours,” Major-General Al Merri said.
The incident took place two weeks ago at Jebel Ali Port when the gang cut fence wires and stole the cars after replacing the number plates.
Major-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said that they used a tow truck to transport the cars to a warehouse.
“They changed the plate numbers so they could take them out of the yard and then used the truck to transport them to a warehouse in a neighbouring city. The cars were worth Dh1.5 million,” Maj-Gen Al Mansouri said.
The police identified the suspects and arrested the mastermind who confessed to his involvement and identified his accomplices.
“He planned the robbery while another person watched the place. Another one brought the plate numbers, while four others drove the cars out of the yard. Another one used the rented tow truck to transport the vehicles and another was supposed to sell the cars but we arrested them all within 24 hours,” Major-General Al Mansouri added.
Though the gang members had escaped to different cities in the UAE, police managed to track them down and arrest them all. They will be referred to the Public Prosecution to finish the investigation.
