Dubai: Former captain of Australian national football team Craig Andrew Moore was fined Dh1,000 on Sunday after he confessed he had consumed alcohol, when he appeared in court.
The 34-year-old footballer pleaded guilty to the charge in the Dubai Misdemeanours Court before Presiding Judge Abdullah Khulaif Abu Zaid.
The player [who was on bail until he appeared in court] was made to wait for a couple of hours before he was taken to the Public Prosecution's Criminal Rulings Execution Section to implement yesterday's judgment.
Chief Prosecutor Sami Al Shamsi, Head of Bur Dubai Prosecution, said last week Dubai Police referred Moore, who played in 2006 and 2010 Fifa World Cups to the Public Prosecution facing primary charges of consuming liquor, assaulting a policeman, and refusing to pay a taxi fare.
"He was facing primary charges of consuming liquor, assaulting a government employee [without specifying whether it was a verbal or physical assault] and refusing to pay taxi fares," Al Shamsi said.
"Prosecutor Ahmad Al Zarouni questioned Moore and heard the statements of the policeman and the taxi driver.
"The policeman, who was assaulted, and the taxi driver [who complained against Moore] waived their personal rights and dropped their complaints against the former Australian captain. He also paid the taxi fares and the charges were dropped," said Al Shamsi.
Bur Dubai's Chief Prosecutor told Gulf News that Moore was bailed after a passport was placed in the custody of the law enforcement officers.
