Dubai: Dubai Police have arrested a man alleged to have strangled a woman to death inside her flat over a financial dispute, police said on Thursday.

The arrest was made less than 24 hours after the incident, the police said.

Police said the 32-year-old suspect met the victim and went to her flat in Al Baraha area in Dubai before having an argument over money and then killed her, stole her wallet, phone and fled.

Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs at Dubai Police, praised the efforts of the officers as they identified and arrested the suspect hiding in another emirate.

“Command and control room in Dubai Police were alerted about the death of an African woman inside her flat in Al Baraha area. There was a criminal motive behind her death and we launched an intensive investigation as she was strangled to death,” Maj Gen Al Mansouri said.

The woman was a visitor to the country.

Lt Colonel Adel Al Joker, Director of Criminal investigation Department (CID) at Dubai Police, said that using latest technology in the Criminal Data Analysis Center helped to identify the killer who is a resident in the country.

“He went to another emirate after the murder but we arrested him. He confessed that he went with the woman to her flat and they had a dispute over money and then strangled her to death and stole her belongings,” Lt Col Al Joker said.

The suspect has been referred to Dubai Public Prosecution to finish the investigation.
