Dubai: A Dubai criminal court has convicted two Arab women of assaulting their mother, fining each of them Dh1,000.

The case later moved to civil court after the mother sought compensation for the emotional and psychological harm she suffered.

In its ruling, the civil court said the criminal judgment was binding in establishing that the assault had occurred, forming the basis for the compensation claim.

Citing established legal principles, the court noted that moral harm include any injury to dignity, feelings, or honor, including psychological pain, and that assessing such damages is within the court’s discretion.

After reviewing the evidence, the court concluded that the mother endured both physical and emotional harm from the attack.

It ordered the daughters to jointly pay Dh30,000 in compensation, in addition to 5 percent legal interest accruing from the date the ruling becomes final.
