Dubai: Police have arrested a man in connection with a serious hit-and-run in Ras Al Khaimah.

The accident happened at around 4pm on Monday. According to Ras Al Khaimah Police, a pedestrian reported that the driver fled the scene after knocking down a biker.

In a panic, the truck driver quickly left the scene and failed to help the seriously injured biker.

Col. Ahmad Al Naqbi, director of Traffic and Patrols Department, said that the central operations room immediately dispatched a traffic patrol unit, an ambulance and paramedics to the scene.

Within three hours of the reported incident, police were able to identify and arrest the fugitive driver.

“The biker was gravely wounded and transferred to hospital for treatment. The truck driver has since been arrested, and the case referred to the concerned authorities where further legal action will be pursued," said Col. Al Naqbi. 

He added out that hit-and-run incidents is a crime in the UAE, and motorists who run away from traffic accidents will be heavily penalized for their negligence and irresponsible behavior.

The UAE’s amended federal traffic law of 2017 states that motorists who cause an accident and flees the scene will be fined with Dh500, six black points and have their vehicle confiscated for seven days.

If the driver is involved in a serious accident and drives off, then the punishment will be decided by the public prosecution, in addition to black points and vehicle confiscation for a minimum of 60 days.
