Dubai: A jobless man has been accused of biting a policeman, assaulting and striking two others with a stick when they tried to apprehend him for bootlegging.

The three policemen were patrolling Nakheel area when they spotted the 26-year-old Nigerian man selling alcohol to the public in the street in March.

When policemen showed the Nigerian suspect their IDs and tried to handcuff him, he turned violent.

The suspect resisted arrest and assaulted the three policemen with a traditional Nigerian stick that he had been carrying with him and bit one of them at his thigh.

However, the policemen managed to restrain the suspect and took him into custody.

Prosecutors charged the suspect with physically assaulting the three policemen and injuring them.

Jail wardens did not bring the suspect to the Dubai Court of First Instance where he was scheduled to enter his plea on Sunday.

One of the policemen told prosecutors that they saw the suspect selling alcohol in a street in Naif area.

“We went to apprehend him … when I asked him about the liquor bottle, he told me that he was selling them. Once we tried to take him into custody, he turned physically violent and assaulted us. He was carrying a Nigerian stick that he used to beat us and he also bit me at my thigh …,” the policeman told prosecutors.

Another policeman told prosecutors that the Nigerian suspect assaulted them and refused to surrender despite having been told that they are policemen.

The third policeman told prosecutors that they did not assault the suspect, who fell down and injured himself when he resisted the arrest.

The trial reconvenes on November 14 when the suspect will be brought to the court.
