bu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Police have issued a warning regarding the growing threat of electronic fraud, where scammers lure victims with false promises of wealth.
These criminals, police noted, continuously adapt their deceptive tactics to target as many individuals as possible.
Major General Mohammed Suhail Al Rashidi, Director of the Criminal Security Sector, stressed that the Abu Dhabi Police is dedicated to expanding its services, improving crime prevention measures, and raising awareness about emerging threats to safeguard national resources and achievements. This aligns with the police force’s strategic goal of enhancing security and public safety.
Major General Al Rashidi highlighted some common examples of fraud, such as scams involving fake trading platforms. In these cases, fraudsters post convincing advertisements featuring professional, official-looking imagery to build trust. When victims deposit funds, they are shown false profit increases to encourage additional investments. However, when attempting to withdraw funds, victims discover they are unable to access their money.
Fraudulent links
He warned the public about fraudulent links claiming to be from insurance companies or well-known restaurants and retailers. These counterfeit sites offer attractive deals in exchange for payments, after which the fraudsters steal funds from the victims’ credit card information.
Fake jobs
The police also urged caution against scams involving fake job postings. Fraudsters often exploit official events and public occasions to create bogus recruitment pages or impersonate accredited agencies, asking applicants to pay fees for non-existent job opportunities.
Personal data
Majo General Al Rashidi further advised internet and smartphone users to protect their personal data and avoid sharing sensitive information to prevent falling victim to phone scams, blackmail, electronic fraud, and other cybercrimes. He stressed the importance of collaboration between police, banks, the media, and social media platforms in the fight against cybercrime.
How to report fraud
Abu Dhabi Police has called on the public to report any incidents of fraud. Individuals can visit the nearest police station, use the Abu Dhabi Police smart app for “Police Station in Your Phone” services, or contact the Aman service at 8002626, send a text to 2828, or email aman@adpolice.gov.ae to report suspicious activity and help combat these deceptive practices.
