Abu Dhabi: Inspectors at Abu Dhabi Customs on Sunday foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 13 million Saudi riyals through Al Ghuwaifat border.

The money as seized from a 39-year-old male of African origin and an accomplice of the same nationality.

“The money, which amounted to more than 13 million riyals, was hidden in the back door and rear seats of the car,” Abu Dhabi Customs said in a statement.

Hamad Mohammad Al Hurr Al Suwaidi, chairman of the Department of Finance, commended the efficiency of the customs officials.

The case has been referred to the concerned authorities for legal action.

In September 2011, the UAE Central Bank decided to raise the minimum amount of cash and monetary instruments, including travellers’ cheques and bonds, that travellers can carry to Dh100,000 or an equivalent amount in other currencies. This applies to both arriving and departing travellers.

Saeed Ahmad Al Muhairi, director-general of Abu Dhabi Customs, said: “The main objective behind applying the disclosure of cash law is to strengthen the statistical database along with supporting the economy by creating an appropriate environment to attract foreign investment.”
