Dubai: Two brothers have been accused of punching a manager and breaking his tooth, assaulting his friend and cursing them in public, a court heard on Thursday.

In May, the Portuguese manager and his wife were said to have been out on a Friday afternoon, with an Indian friend and his wife, at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).

Court records say the two couples were sitting on chairs at a restaurant’s waiting area when they spotted two British brothers, 30 and 27, when one of them pointed at the Indian’s female friend, who was accompanying the couples.

The British brother, who pointed his finger, also spoke in an inappropriate manner about the female friend, and his attitude coerced the Indian man to confront him.

A fracas ensued between the Portuguese manager, his Indian friend and the two brothers, who assaulted the men and cursed them as well.

One of the brothers punched the Portuguese and broke his tooth, while the other brother injured the Indian on his neck.

The Britons’ father intervened and stopped his sons from continuing the assault; meanwhile, the assaulted men called the police.

Prosecutors accused the British brothers of assaulting the Portuguese and the Indian, cursing them and offending them in a public place.

According to the charges sheet, prosecutors said the Britons caused a 3 per cent permanent disability to the Portuguese.

The brothers failed to show up before the Dubai Court of First Instance, where they were scheduled to enter their pleas on Thursday.

The Indian claimed to prosecutors: “My Portuguese friend, his wife, my wife and friends went to DIFC on a Friday afternoon. We were all sitting in the waiting area when the incident happened. I saw one of the brothers pointing at my friend and speaking provocatively. When I told him that what he was doing was not right, he assaulted me and pushed me backwards. They cursed us as well. Their suspects’ father then intervened and asked us to excuse his sons, but when my Portuguese friend tried to call the police, the 27-year-old brother punched him and broke his tooth.”

The Portuguese manager confirmed his friend’s statement and testified to prosecutors that the police asked them to go to the hospital for treatment and then visit the police station to file a complaint.

Presiding judge Habib Awad will hand out a ruling in absentia on November 8.
