Craftsmen revive history

In the good old days, dhows used to be one of the main modes of transport between the UAE, its neighbouring countries and beyond. But with the advent of modern transport, the traditional dhow transportation system has receded to the background.

However, a group of craftsmen near Mina market in Abu Dhabi, keep the memories alive by handcrafting them for sale.

Using commonly available and cheaper materials, they produce excellently finished handicrafts. Often, when I stop to admire the products, I realise that the low price is actually a steal, when compared to the revival of heritage and traditional beauty.

Such crafts should be encouraged, as today's generation is unaware of the roots of their society and how important it is to appreciate the country's history.

Even as gifts, such pieces of history are great tools for knowledge and allow the nation's heritage to be upheld in all its splendour.
