The Congress Party in Maharashtra held a meeting yesterday to decide they would contest six of the eight seats that will fall vacant in the Upper House of the Maharashtra legislature.

The party plans to propose to their ally in the government, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) that they would fight six seats and leave two to thelatter.

The Congress meeting could not come to a conclusive decision since the NCP is likely to reject this offer as it is claiming three seats. The elections to the eight seats will be held on December 1.

Four sitting seats of the Congress are from Ahmednagar, Mumbai, Dhule and Nandurbar whilst the rest are from Buldana, Akola, Nagpur and Solapur. The Congress feels it has a good chance in Nagpur and Solapur. Ranjit Deshmukh, head of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, said the proposal would be put before the NCP.
