Commuters Suffer While Waiting

"There's no shade at many bus stops so we have to stand like this for up to an hour waiting for the bus," said 30-year-old Sampath C, as he tries to shield his pregnant wife from the sun.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), there are about 1,600 bus stops, in Dubai but only 153 are sheltered.

Shadeless bus stops are a huge problem, says Annabelle Nieto, a 24-year-old Filipino waitress.

"If they could offer us some shelter rather than just a pole that displays timetables, it would be a great relief to all bus passengers," she said.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority website, a total of 500 air conditioned waiting shelters will be erected on 62 routes being serviced by 504 public buses. One such shelter was recently opened along Jumeirah Beach Road.
