Dubai: For 364 days, most mothers work round-the-clock to make sure our everyday needs — from breakfast to school uniforms to packed lunch, to name a few — are met. But for one whole day yesterday, community group In Dubai We Trust gave mothers a chance to take their minds off work and chores, and focus on themselves instead.

"Without our mums we won't be here, we all know that. And of course they are the backbone of the society. Carrying a baby for nine months is the biggest experience any mum can have. So I see no point why we shouldn't be giving them priority and listening to them," Salma Ali, one of the organisers, told Gulf News.

The group's first stop was at the Flower Boutique at Dubai International Financial Centre. "I like that I get to use my creativity instead of someone else telling me what to do. And I also got to do it with my mum," Aanya Rupasinghe, 10, said.

Side-by-side, mothers and daughters cut the flowers and tied the bows. The venue also provided mothers with a chance to interact with other mothers.

"I love the fact that we're meeting new people to share ideas with about our kids, to share stories with especially what a mum goes through. And knowing that you're not the only mum who goes through that experience [is a relief in itself]," Urmilla, Aanya's mother, said.

For lunch, the group carpooled to Hard Rock Cafe at Dubai Festival City. Later, the group headed to Wow Beauty Saloon at Ramada Hotel Bur Dubai for some afternoon pampering.

"I would like to have more activities like this as it will make mums and daughters closer to each other," said Emirati mother Hanan Abdullah Mousa, who brought her five-year-old daughter Sara with her.

In what seemed like a long list of wishes for others, Jelena Geha, a mother of two, had only one wish for herself: "I really wish they would come up with a machine that presses and folds laundry!"
