Abu Dhabi: Around 71.8 per cent of children injuries occurred at homes in 2012, the Abu Dhabi Health Authority report said.

Despite the fact that these injuries were not fatal, they may lead to permanent disabilities, an official said yesterday.

A community based programme has been implemented across the UAE to provide tools and skills to enhance children protection from different accidents such as, fires, falls from balconies, drowning, poisoning and others.

“Supported by the Ministry of Interior, the programme will include around 60 hours of practical and sufficient training for staff to achieve excellence in the field of child protection and to promote survival of children from injuries and accidents,” said major general Nassar Lakhraibani Al Nuaimi, chairman of the child protection committee.

“Boosting communication between the school and family is a major element to boost child protection and ensure their safety,” he added.

Al Nuaimi also pointed out that the process of selecting candidates to participate in the child protection programme will be held all over the UAE to provide full care and support children’s rights.

Additionally, the Ministry of Interior has established a workshop recently to assist parents on how to deal with emergencies caused by accidents such as, suffocation, burns, and poisoning
