Sharjah: A cargo ship sank off the Sharjah coast on Wednesday morning, injuring two, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

One of the crew members is missing, the official added.

The vessel sank eight kilometres off the Sharjah coast.

“The vessel sank on Wednesday morning with seven crew members on board. The crew members were Iranian and Indian,” the official said. The official said the two crew members, an Indian and an Iranian, sustained injuries and were moved to Kuwaiti and Al Qasimi hospitals respectively where their condition is described as stable.

The police operations room dispatched rescue teams and notified the Coast Guard on being informed of the incident.

When the rescue teamed arrived at the site, they found six men on board had jumped into the sea as water had entered the vessel. Two crew members sustained serious to moderate injuries and were given first aid at the scene, while four crew members were unhurt.

Police at Khalid Port are probing the incident to determine the cause of the incident. The search for the missing sailor continues.
