The first International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination was conducted at the British Council, Sharjah, on Sunday.

Several of the students who sat for the examination undertook the preparation course at the council, said Justin Kernot, branch manager.

"IELTS is well known and respected around the world," he noted. "The exam is designed for students who would like to study in the UK, and also for those who are contemplating emigrating to Australia, New Zealand or Canada."

Two modules are on offer, with students wishing to study abroad having the Academic module, and those planning to emigrate taking the General module.

The council runs preparation courses every month for a total of 36 hours, with the next in the series beginning on Saturday. When signing up, students will also be able to register for the next IELTS examination to be held on May 30.
