Sharjah: A 13-year-old Indian boy was run over by a speeding car while trying to fetch a ball from the road in Al Buhairah area on Monday evening, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The boy, identified as J.K.M., was admitted to Al Qasimi Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police patrols and paramedics arrived at the scene after being alerted around 8pm.

Police said the child was playing football with his friend when the accident occurred. The ball was kicked on to the road and the boy went running after it when he was hit by a speeding car.

The boy died on the spot.

Police said the driver was speeding and inattentive. “The driver is in custody and being questioned at Al Buhairah police station,” an officer said.

Sharjah Police appealed to all parents to teach their children to observe road safety and asked drivers to give priority to people crossing roads.

Brigadier Saif Ziri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, urged parents to keep a watch over their children and not allow them to play in areas which pose a risk to their safety.
