Flag was made by Emiratis of Shaam area to be installed on a nearby hilltop to mark UAE's 38th National Day
Ras Al Khaimah: Emiratis of the Shaam area on Sunday condemned the alleged burning of what they claimed was the "biggest UAE flag" they had made to celebrate the 38th UAE National Day.
They suspected some people from the neighbouring Ghaleelah area were behind the mischief detected around 1am yesterday.
Firemen prevented the fire from spreading and police intervened to defuse tension in the area.
The police are investigating.
The flag 270 metres long and 50 metres wide was made by hundreds of Emiratis working for 10 days and was kept in the Ahmad Bin Majed School.
They said the fire destroyed the flag and a pick up on which it was loaded to be taken to a nearby hill for installation.
A police air wing helicopter was expected to be used to help install the huge flag.
In another complaint pending with the police, residents of Shaam have alleged some suspected miscreants from the Ghaleelah area burned down a wooden castle with the UAE flag painted on its base on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the residents of Ghaleelah have claimed that the castle was installed in an area that belonged to them and that Shaam residents did not have the right to use that place.
