Advani slacking off

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has charged the Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani of playing a dubious role on the Ayodhya issue, saying that as he is incharge of the Home Ministry it is his duty to ensure internal security in the country, threatened by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

"The VHP's Ayodhya programme is nothing but a political stunt. Whenever elections come, Ayodhya comes. Unfortunately, instead of preventing the VHP from threatening communal harmony, the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is encouraging them by saying you trust the VHP," CPI national secretary D. Raja told Gulf News yesterday.

Terming the VHP anti-Muslim and a fascist organisation, Raja said that VHP cannot be trusted to maintain peace at Ayodhya on Friday, since they had demolished the Babri Masjid in 1992 after promising not to harm it.

Raja, however, does not agree with the charge that the provincial Uttar Pradesh government is playing into the hands of the VHP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by cracking down on VHP workers on their way to Ayodhya. "It is the duty of the government to ensure status quo at the demolition site is not allowed to be disturbed."
