A leading Indian practitioner of acupressure is offering free treatment during a seven-day visit to the UAE. Dr Asha Birla has treated millions successfully with acupressure in India and has been honoured by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for her work in alternative medicine.
Birla, who is in the UAE until December 1, began her career in 1982 in a remote corner of the Indian state of Rajasthan - a conservative environment that was not very open to a female practitioner. But slowly people started paying attention to her work.
"They started approaching me for treatment. I've always wanted to work for people and through that service achieve inner peace." She started travelling and treating people. From diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, thalassemia to thyroid problems, cancer and children with special needs, all are treated.
Treatment is free with the aid of a trust specially set up for the purpose. Her focus is on cancer patients and children with special needs.
During her previous visit to the UAE, when she treated over 500 patients in just 10 days, Birla found many common ailments. She feels that with suitable precautions and natural remedies, these problems can be easily alleviated.
"People in the UAE seem to face common problems like hypertension, diabetes, migraine, arthritis, rheumatism, joint pain, asthmatic allergies, cervical and lumbar spondylosis." "All illnesses are due to energy imbalances within the body. According to ancient Indian texts, the body is made up of the five elements that make up our surrounding environment, namely ether, air, water, fire and earth.
"If there is a shift in energy levels in either of these five constituents, we feel pain and uneasiness, which means that we're ill. We should consider pain and uneasiness as our friends, as they alert us to the energy imbalance.
"Acupressure to certain nerve points in our body helps supply the required energy to restore the balance. Our ears, feet and hands are like remote sensor pads for acupressure. And there are no side-effects to this treatment."
Birla said that all these ailments originate from the lifestyle in the UAE, which is fast-paced, full of stress and spent constantly in an air-conditioned environment. She feels that if people make a few minor adjustments, they can keep these ailments at bay.
"The first thing to do is to have positive thoughts, negativity aggravates your body's poor physical condition. "Then have a healthy breakfast, light lunch and dinner. To maintain the dynamic flow of energy within the body, rub the palm of your hands together, while raising it from the chin to the level of your forehead.
"Just before going to bed, put a drop of pure ghee (clarified butter) on your navel and rub it in. It will give you a well-toned and radiant complexion, along with keeping problems related to constipation and flatulence away.
"For people with joint pain, arthritis or rheumatic complaints, they should wear cotton socks and gloves while staying in an air conditioned environment. Covering the ears also helps to keep coughs and colds away.
"Rubbing mustard oil on the soles of your feet, also helps maintain your health. "These pointers are very simple but they will help enhance the quality of people's lives." Birla has received six national awards for her work in alternative medicine. She can be contacted on Sharjah (06) 5610929.
