Abu Dhabi: Want to flash that perfect smile? Digital Smile Design (DSD) may just be the thing for you.

Prosthodontist Dr Anas Aloum who works with this conceptual design tool at Abu Dhabi’s Hikma Medical Centre said: “It is the art of designing and ‘test driving’ your perfect smile before you cosmetically transform the way you smile.”

“In just two sittings, you can see and experience the cosmetic transformation in a mock-up trial before actually committing to the smile makeover treatment. There is no guesswork. You pick and choose the final outcome.”

The first step of DSD is a consultation in which your teeth impressions and pictures of the face are taken. These images are transferred to a computer where they are digitally modified using advanced facial mapping techniques while taking into consideration your personality and elements of your face.

The digitally modified pictures are then sent to a dental lab along with teeth impressions where the proposed digital design is fabricated onto a mould.

“Once the mould is ready, we transfer the design into the mouth, allowing the patient to test drive the smile. This mock-up gives a sneak-peak into your new look and helps you to make suggestions and understand the upcoming treatment plan,” explained Dr Aloum.

Ali Adel, 27, a Canadian living in Dubai who underwent the DSD treatment, told XPRESS it was a life-changing experience for him. “Some people buy cars; some buy clothes and cameras. I brought a smile,” he said.

“It cost Dh35,000 but it was worth it. I travel the world and have to meet a lot of people. Now I don’t need a joke to break the ice when I meet a client. My smile does the trick,” Ali added.

Each tooth makeover costs approximately Dh3,000 and the mock-up costs Dh5,000.

According to Dr Aloum, DSD is safe, pain-free and completely reversible with no change to permanent teeth.

“It is perfect for anyone not sure of how they will end up looking. It allows for trust to develop between the dental specialist and the patient, and gives the patient ample opportunities to be involved in the design of their smile.”
