New EAD resolution aims to protect groundwater quality and ensure sustainable water use
Abu Dhabi: In an effort to preserve groundwater reserves and prevent their depletion, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has issued a resolution identifying areas within the emirate where groundwater well drilling is prohibited. The objective is to regulate groundwater well drilling activities and safeguard both the quantity and quality of groundwater in Abu Dhabi.
The resolution was developed under the provisions of Law No. 5 of 2016 on the Regulation of Groundwater in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which authorises EAD to designate prohibited drilling zones and to issue the necessary guidelines and procedures to prevent the deterioration of groundwater quality in those areas, as well as to promote its sustainable use.
The Agency said it had collaborated and coordinated with relevant entities across the emirate during the drafting phase, in line with the approved legislative framework in Abu Dhabi.
The provisions of the resolution apply to all groundwater wells located within the designated restricted zones. It outlines the types of drilling, maintenance, and deepening activities that are permitted in these areas and defines the obligations of well owners in accordance with the requirements set out in Law No. 5 of 2016 and its Executive Regulations, including conditions for obtaining licenses.
EAD emphasised that the issuance of this resolution is part of the ongoing development of Abu Dhabi’s environmental legislative framework aimed at conserving the emirate’s natural resources, including groundwater.
The resolution contributes to addressing potential negative environmental impacts arising from excessive water consumption, unsustainable water usage practices, and other related activities. The Agency is implementing the resolution across the emirate in cooperation with its strategic partners, following systematic and organised procedures to achieve its intended goals.
