Dubai: Metro commuters at Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) will soon have a respite from the sun as a new air-conditioned walkway will link the DMCC metro station with two locations in the area.
According to the community’s master developer, the walkway will ensure that the commuters in the JLT community will not have to step outside to reach the station or to walk from the station to their respective destinations.
Offering direct access to and from Almas Tower and Uptown Dubai in JLT, the walkway will come as a relief to the thousands of daily commuters who currently struggle through the last leg of their trips.
A top official at the Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre (DMCC) centre, the master developer of JLT, confirmed to Gulf News that the walkway is being planned to ease the commute of people.
“The metro station plays a central part in our mobility plans; connecting and integrating our community with Dubai and ensuring individuals can commute with ease. In addition, the last few years have seen greater changes to urban mobility, and as part of our Smart District programme, we are looking at innovative solutions that will improve all aspects of travel to and from the world’s leading freezone at DMCC,” said Ahmad Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC.
In a statement to Gulf News, he added that as the master developer of JLT, DMCC is excited to play a prominent role in defining the development of its community and paving the way for an even more integrated and vibrant business and leisure hub.
Though, more details about the walkway were not immediately available either from DMCC or the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the bridge is likely to be several hundred metres long as Uptown Dubai is located at a distance of around one kilometre from the DMCC metro station, while the Almas Tower is around 250 metres away from the station.
The walkway could be similar to the one which was opened in 2016 connecting Ibn Battuta Metro station with Ibn Battuta Mall.
Similar bridges also connect metro stations with Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall, but this is going to be the first walkway to link a community with the metro.
DMCC station is the most popular metro station on the Red Line, excluding the interchange stations, with 5.524 million passengers in the first half of this year. The station, which was earlier called JLT station, was renamed last month.
The JLT district is a mixed-use community comprising of 68 commercial and residential towers, home to over 100,000 people who live or work in the area.
