Dubai: Hundreds of UAE Motorists on their way to work early Tuesday morning were caught in severe traffic jams, as multiple road crashes occurred on Dubai’s major highways.

Ongoing road works were also contributing to delays. Commuters were advised that among the areas best to avoid whenever possible were the Dubai-Sharjah Road, where traffic had been slow moving for about two hours; Al Khail Road, Emirates Road and Shaikh Zayed Road.

At least two vehicular accidents were reported on the busy Dubai-Sharjah highway before 8.30am and severe tailbacks extended for more than five kilometres, from Al Mulla Plaza in Dubai all the way to Safeer Mall in Sharjah, according to satellite reports from Google.

“I was wondering why there were more traffic jams today than usual. It took me longer, about an hour, just to reach the office from Al Nahda,” said one expat who was stuck in traffic on the Dubai-Sharjah road.

As of 10.23am, this section of the road, particularly towards the direction of Dubai, was still experiencing serious gridlocks, although some Sharjah-bound passengers were also met with delays.

One of the road crashes occurred on the Dubai-bound lane of Al Ittihad road  in a tunnel near Al Mulla Plaza, confirmed Dubai Police on Twitter.

Other traffic reports also showed massive congestions in many parts of Dubai. Motorists were stuck in traffic on Al Khail Road, especially when approaching Shaikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road (SMBZR) towards Abu Dhabi due to another accident.

Delays were also met by motorists on E611-Emirates Road, particularly on the Al Ain Road Interchange, towards the direction of Abu Dhabi due to multiple accidents. Another accident was likewise reported on the Abu-Dhabi-bound lane of Shaikh Zayed Road, after Oasis Mall.

No details were immediately available on the vehicular accidents.
