Abu Dhabi: Beginning Saturday, all public parking spaces in the Abu Dhabi island are paid parking zones for six days.
Free parking in the capital came to an end on Friday, September 7, following new parking regulations introduced by the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) on August 18.
Grace period over
Residents living in previously free parking areas — such as Al Muroor and Al Bateen — were given a three-week period to obtain residential parking permits unless they want to pay daily and hourly parking fees.
Residential permits were issued by Mawaqif to residents to organise parking spaces across the city and ensure the smooth flow of traffic. The department said it would also eliminate the problem of improper parking practices in the capital.
Areas designated for residents can be easily identified through Mawaqif signs marked with “Resident Permit Only”.
These areas are not allowed for use by non-permit holders from 9pm to 8am. They can use it, however, after paying the relevant fees.
Dh800 for first parking permit
Residential permits cost Dh800 for Emiratis for the first permit. A second permit costs Dh1,200.
An Emirati family living in an apartment are entitled to two free parking permits, but may obtain two more as per approval by DoT.
Parking permits for resident expatriates may be obtained for Dh800 for the first permit while a second permit costs Dh1,200.
Motorists caught violating the new rules will be fined. Parking without a ticket or permit, failing to display the ticket or permit, and using a ticket or permit not specified for the parking area will fetch a fine of Dh200 per violation.
A Dh100 is given to people who exceed the permissible parking time limit and another Dh100 will be issued to those who exceed the maximum allowed parking time limit.
