Dubai: Shamsa Jasim Al Naqbi, a grade 11 student at Um omara Secondary School Sharjah, has been declared the winner of the third Arab Reading Challenge 2018 across the UAE. She beat more than 351,000 students, who took part in the challenge across the UAE’s schools.
Al Naqbi got the the top proze for her ability to select and analyse the most important topics covered by books she read. It is also for her ability summarize the important points and scientific and humanitarian values that the books focused on. The Grad 12 student Fatima Mohammad Sharif Ba’lawi from at Al Saleh school in Sharjah came in the second place while the grade 11 student Abdullah Mohammad Al Marzouqi from GEMS Dubai American Academy occupied the third place followed by the grade 3 student Yousuf Aldashti from the School of Research Science Dubai.
Wahida Abdul Aziz Jasim, Skills Development and Project Manager, won the distinguished coordinator title while Asem Mahmoud Abara, from Al Dhafra Educational Zone, was awarded the distinguished supervisor award.
Bayat Al Rdwan Primary School for Girls at Al Dhafra region-Abu Dhabi received the UAE’s best school award, beating out other finalists.
The top 10 students across the UAE, along with their supervisors and the winning students and distinguished supervisors from various educational zones were also honoured at a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, tweeted: I am proud of the 350,000 students who participated in the Arab Reading Challenge in the UAE. Congratulations to Shamsa Al Naqbi, who placed first. I would also like to congratulate more than 10.5 million Arab students who took part in the Arab Reading Challenge. A generation of readers is a promising one, and makes us optimistic about a beautiful future.”
Hussain Ebrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, hailed the high quality of results achieved by the ARC in just three years. Al Hammadi said that today, the challenge is the biggest annual initiative of its kind for Arab students.
He said that the challenge aims to consolidate a culture of reading, and therefore boosting the students’ connection with world around them and providing them with new knowledge.
He pointed out that the challenge, which was launched by Shaikh Mohammad, develops students who are able to expand their knowledge and learn about different cultures, which in turn instils in them values of tolerance and openness towards others.
The 2018 session has succeeded in reaching more than 10.5 million Arab students in 44 countries after the project became aglobal. This year, the registration was officially open for Arab students in foreign countries with the aim of promoting the culture of reading in Arabic and deepen Arab students’ bonds with their mother tongue language.
More than 52,000 schools participated in this year’s challenge while the number of supervisors participating in the challenge exceeded 86,000.
