Abu Dhabi: A industrial coordination council will be set up for the industry sector to improve priorities for industrial development, within a unified national vision that is capable of integrating the specialisations of every emirate.

The council will work on ensuring cohesion and harmony between various government policies that serve the industrial sector, as well as coordinating requirements for education and industry.

The establishment of the council was approved during a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace chaired by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, and Lieutenant General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, were present.

Shaikh Mohammad stressed the importance of consolidating a unified national vision and strategy for the industry sector, which will meet the needs of the local and global market, help face global challenges in this sector and result in non-traditional models in the industry sector. “Our goal is an advanced and flexible industry sector which surpasses traditional industry models and meets the growing requirements of markets,” said Shaikh Mohammad.

“The UAE is always working on updating legislations related to the industry sector, using modern technology that can boost it and opening up new markets for national industries,” added Shaikh Mohammad.

The council is in line with the UAE Vision 2021 and National Agenda goals to develop a competitive and sustainable economy that is based on knowledge and innovation.

The council’s members will consist of 13 bodies that represent federal and local industrial bodies from every emirate. It will be chaired by the Minister of Economy. The council’s duties include approving unified performance indexes for the UAE’s industry sector and following up on their implementation. It will issue reports that assess the performance of the sector. The council will propose suitable initiatives and mechanisms for supporting cooperation and the exchange of expertise between different government bodies operating in the field of industry, as well as between the public and private sector.

The council’s establishment will have a positive impact on other sectors and policies in the UAE, particularly education, knowledge and labour, by taking into consideration that education programmes must conform to the needs of the job market in the industry sector. It will also encourage entrepreneurs and Emiratis to set up industrial projects, creating new job opportunities in the sector.
