Fresh upon completing the Dubai Metro tunnel under the Dubai Creek, transport officials announced yesterday they will begin digging a second underwater tunnel by the end of the year.

The new tunnel will travel 2.5 kilometres from the Al Ras area near the mouth of the creek southwesterly toward BurJuman Centre as part of the Metro's second or Green Line.

"The initial drive will start in December," a Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) official told XPRESS. He said it remains unclear if additional underground tunnels will be needed when this one is completed.

The first underground tunnel crossed the creek in mid-August as part of the link between Union Square and BurJuman Centre on the Metro's primary Red Line.

A land-based tunnel was also completed on August 30 and provides a link between Union Square and Deira City Centre.

The RTA official said a new tunnel boring machine arrived at Dubai port yesterday from Japan.
