Dubai: Dubai Police have recorded a decline in traffic fines just a month after the new traffic law came into effect on July 1.
Dubai Police issued 277,000 traffic fines in July this year compared to 304,000 in June.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of traffic department at Dubai Police, said: “It is a promising drop and will reduce traffic accidents on Dubai roads during the coming months. We are already witnessing a 30 per cent drop in number of deaths on the roads this year.”
Fines for lane violations topped the list with 22,542 while blocking traffic came in second with 21,033.
“We fined 39 drivers during July for slowing down to photograph, or film, major accidents. It is a reckless and irresponsible act, which attracts a fine of Dh1,000,” Brig Al Mazroui said.
Police also issued 4,281 fines for jaywalking, 2,947 fines for drivers using the phone and 1,860 fines for sudden swerving, which is considered one of the main reasons behind traffic fatalities.
In the first half of the year, 76 people were killed and 996 injured in 1,447 major traffic accidents compared to 112 deaths and 1,056 injuries in 1,490 major traffic accidents in the same period last year.
