Dubai: Reducing speed limits on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed and Emirates roads has led to a decline in traffic accidents by 20 per cent, an official said.
Major-General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Dubai Police’s Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations and head of the UAE Federal Traffic Council, said he made a comparison of the traffic accidents and deaths on the two roads from October 15 last year until March 10 this year and the results were positive.
“There is a 20 per cent decline in traffic accidents and 13 per cent drop in deaths. The results were positive after reducing the speed limit to 110kph,” Maj-Gen Al Zafein said during a radio show in Dubai.
He pointed that there is no plan to reduce the speed limit further on the two roads.
“The decision of reducing speed limit came after intensive meetings and studies with Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai, and we can have another look on the results after a year. Our aim is to save lives,” he added.
The maximum speed limit on two major highways of Dubai, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road, was reduced on October 15 last year.
