Dubai: Schools in the UAE are celebrating top marks by their students on Friday following newly released International Baccalaureate (IB) examination results upon leaving secondary school this year.

The GEMS Education students (IB) performed above international averages, the education firm said on Friday.

“The students’ performance continues to surpass international benchmarks, with a 2018 average pass rate of 92 per cent, set against the international pass rate of 78 per cent in 2017. The inclusive nature of GEMS schools saw the number of students sitting IB Diploma exams increase to 451 this year,” said GEMS in a press release.

James MacDonald, vice-president education (US & IB Curriculum Schools), GEMS Education, said: “We are immensely proud of this year’s cohort of GEMS IB Diploma students and their results. The IB Diploma programme is very rigorous and our students’ hard work has paid off.”

Taaleem, a Dubai-based education provider, said it was elated with its IB results.

“We are extremely proud to have had our best year ever with the ... and IBDP results. Our students from our four schools — Uptown School, Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Greenfield Community School in Dubai and Raha International School in Abu Dhabi — are now looking forward to continuing their education careers in leading universities and colleges throughout the world,” Taalem said.

“We are absolutely delighted to set a new benchmark for the school. An average point score of 33 is a tremendous result for a genuinely inclusive school. This reflects the hard work and dedication of our students and staff,” said Chris Bromham, principal, Uptown School.

Meanwhile, Repton School Dubai headmaster David Cook said the school was extremely pleased with the IB results.

“We are delighted to announce that 98 per cent of our IBDP students have been awarded the IB Diploma, scoring an average of 34 points or more per student, against a typical global average of 30 points (2018 figures). This 34-point score is one of the highest on record at Repton,” he said.
