Dubai: A man who suspected that his wife was cheating on him got himself an abaya to spy on her.

The 37-year-old Indian husband was said to have overheard his countrywoman wife setting a date to meet someone at a Dubai Metro Station in April.

Having suspected that she was cheating on him, the husband decided to disguise himself as a woman and follow her, according to records, in order to catch her red-handed.

For the purpose of exposing his wife, the man purchased an abaya, niqab and a bra from a store in Deira, which he wore after leaving  work.

In his car, he stuffed the bra with two lemons and put it on. Then, he covered himself from head-to-toe in the abaya and niqab and hurried off to the metro station.

As he was entering one of the metro carts, a policeman stopped him and asked him to remove the niqab to see his face - and so his deception was caught.

The policeman apprehended the 37-year-old immediately.

Prosecutors accused the suspect of dressing up like a woman.

When the defendant appeared before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court, he pleaded guilty and admitted that he cross-dressed to monitor his wife.

According to his confession, to prove that his wife was cheating on him, he needed to catch her in the act so he decided to cross dress and follow her.

The Dubai Misdemeanours Court fined the defendant Dh2,000.

Prosecutors appealed the primary judgement before the Appeal Court and are seeking to stiffen the punishment and have the defendant deported.

When questioned before prosecutors, the defendant said: “I am not a homosexual and I do not usually cross-dress. I doubted that my wife was cheating on me because I heard her telling someone that she would meet him at a metro station. I wore the orange-stuffed bra and covered myself with an abaya because I didn’t want her to see me chasing her. I did not have any criminal intent.”

The appeal court is scheduled to convene later this month.
