Dubai: A man has been jailed for three months for showing his middle finger and beating two policemen who woke him up as he slept between cars in a parking lot.

A building’s Indian watchman saw the 19-year-old Saudi man drunk and sleeping in a dangerous way between two cars in an open parking area at Al Rigga Street.

Once the watchman realised how dangerous it was for the man to sleep between cars, he walked out of the building wanting to call the police, before he came across a patrol team near the building in March.

Two policeman walked towards the spot where the Saudi was sleeping and when they woke him up, the youngster flashed his middle finger in their face and kicked them.

On Thursday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Saudi of assaulting two policemen and gesturing indecently in public.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar also fined the accused Dh1,000 for getting drunk.

The defendant admitted that he got drunk when he defended himself in court but denied kicking and showing his middle finger in the face of the policemen.

The accused will be deported after serving the jail term.

A policeman said the Indian watchman stopped them in the street and alerted them that there was a drunk man sleeping dangerously between cars.

“We went to the spot and saw the Saudi asleep. When I tried to wake him up, he instantly kicked me and showed his middle finger in my face. When the accused jumped up wanting to run away, my partner grabbed him … but the suspect resisted ferociously and bit my partner. He punched him but I managed to assist my colleague in restraining the accused,” he said.

The other policeman confirmed his partner’s statement and said the Saudi punched him on his head and bit him.

The ruling remains subject to appeal.
