Manama: Saudi Arabia’s civil defence said that it wanted to take in university students and staff as volunteer firefighters.

The volunteers’ active involvement would help in dealing with emergency cases, the general directorate said, local Arabic daily Al Watan reported on Wednesday.

In a letter to the ministry of higher education, the civil defence wrote that it was “keen on launching coordination procedures with experienced people in volunteer work at the Saudi universities in order to benefit from their services and knowledge”.

“We are also looking for an adequate system that allows us to call in volunteers who will contribute through their efforts to dealing with emergency cases that will require their active participation,” the civil defence directorate said.

The call was for volunteers from students, teachers and administrative staff, according to the letter.

Al Watan attributed the call by the civil defence for volunteers from universities to a drive to tackle a shortage of firefighters that has sparked numerous complaints.
