Manama: A gang of thieves who stole a 2-million riyals worth of diamond, cash and mobiles have been arrested by the police in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
Spokesman for the police Fawaz Al Miman said that an Indian salesman on October 9 reported that people he did not know forced themselves into his home in Riyadh late in the evening, threatened him with a gun, tied him up and took a case containing a diamond, SR100,000 in cash, a diamond scale and three mobiles.
"Following a series of measures, the police was informed that a man was offering to sell precious stones secretly," Al Miman said. "The police started monitoring his action until they became sure he was involved in the theft. He and his accomplices, Saudi, Yemeni, Indian and Bangladeshi nationals, were arrested."
A search of the home of one of the suspects netted a large quantity of stolen items as well as firearms, he added, Saudi news site Al Marsad reported.
"The police went over their records and they discovered that the gang members were wanted in the case filed by a Filipino who was assaulted and robbed of SR120, 000 that belonged to the company employing him," Al Miman said.
Several Saudis called for stringent punishments against the gang members "in order to deter crime and assaults on innocent people."
