Makkah: Twelve pilgrims were killed and 39 were injured in a bus crash in Saudi Arabia’s Al Jamoom governorate. The pilgrims, mostly Syrians, were on their way to Makkah.

Abdullah Al Gamdi, the spokesperson for the Red Cross in Makkah, told Al Yawm newspaper that 23 emergency teams and two helicopters rushed to the scene and transferred the dead and injured to hospitals in Makkah and the nearby metropolis of Jeddah, adding that the injuries range from moderate to serious. The pilgrims were on their way to Makkah from Madinah. The accident was caused by a tyre burst, said Al Gamdi. Pictures on Saudi news sites showed the bus lying on its back, with heavy vehicles as well as plainclothes people trying to extract the injured.
