Doha: More than 600 housemaids who had entered Qatar illegally or run away from sponsors have been arrested in a crackdown on violators of the law on expatriates, according to Qatar’s daily Al Rayyah.

They also arrested those who worked for someone else other than their sponsor.

“The Search and Follow up Department (SFD) is continuing its inspection drive to book violators of the law that regulates the entry and exit of expatriates and to take legal procedures against them in order to end the problem of an absconding and illegal workforce,” said Col Nasser Mohammad Al Syed of the SFD.

This campaign started in April in co-operation with other departments, “Many offenders who have given shelter to absconding maids and those who supplied them on a hourly basis to different employers have also been booked, based on residency law no 42009,” said Col Al Syed.

The detainees will soon be prosecuted.

Col Al Syed urged the support of residents in the campaign through the SFD hotline 44469522 to report any violation of the residency law.
