Manama: Qatar's rate of car accidents declined by 18 per cent in 2010, as compared with the year 2009, a Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) report indicates.

The report, released on Monday, attributed 47 per cent of car accident cases to rash and negligent driving, while 18 per cent of the accidents were caused by overtaking on the road. At least 17 percent car accidents occurred for jumping traffic signals.

The total number of traffic violation cases in 2010 was 432,000, Qatar Tribune reported.

Not wearing safety belts and overspeeding topped the violations list with 60,000 and 54,000 cases respectively.

The report said that the number of car accidents was 819, with 416 of them occurring in residential areas.
