Muscat A young Indian expatriate has committed suicide today in Mabela Industrial Area in Muscat.

Sivaprasad Ayyappan, 23, hung himself today morning. “I got a call from his brother-in-law, Santosh, informing me about the suicide,” P.M. Jabir, Indian Social Club’s Welfare Secretary, told Gulf News.

Sivaprasad, who hails from Trivandrum in India’s southern state of Kerala, had come only four months ago and was working at a cafeteria. He was married.

Santosh, co-brother-in-law of the deceased, said that there was no indication of any problem or depression. “We are surprised that he (Sivaprasad) had taken this step to end his life,” he said, reiterating that there were no family issues not was there any debt problems.

Jabir, who is also a member of the Kerala government’s Pravasi Welfare Fund Board, said that the body would be sent back to India for final rites probably on Saturday or Sunday.

“The no objection certificate from the Indian embassy has been acquired now we will have to wait for police to hand over body after post-mortem, which could be only on Saturday,” Jabir added.
