Muscat: Four people were charred to death in a head-on collision between two vehicles in Oman’s Northeastern Governorate on Thursday. The horrific crash also resulted in severe injuries to two other passengers, the Royal Oman Police said in its latest bulletin on the grim daily toll in traffic accidents on the Sultanate’s roads.

The latest tragedy occurred on the main carriageway linking the key town of Sinaw in the province of Al Mudhaibi, with the seaside village of Mahout on the Sultanate’s Wusta coast.

Both vehicles erupted in flames upon impact, instantly claiming the lives of four passengers. Police Ambulance and Civil Defence personnel scrambled to the scene after being alerted by passing motorists. Two grievously hurt passengers were taken to Sinaw Hospital.

The mishap comes as authorities brace for an upturn in road-related accidents exacerbated during the scorching summer months. Tyre bursts, engine overheating, drowsiness at the wheel, and fuel tanks exploding on impact, all contribute to a spike in road accidents, and inevitably fatalities, during summer, say experts.
