Manama: The chairman of the Kuwait Journalists Association has become the first Gulf national to head the Arab Journalists Union since its establishment in 1964.

Ahmad Yusuf Bahbahani was elected among the 15 board members to run the pan-Arab union for the next four years and was subsequently selected to head the team. Egyptians Hatem Zakaria and Karem Mahmood were selected as the secretary general and the treasurer respectively.

Moayyad Al Lami, from Iraq, was given the post of first deputy chairman, Abdullah Al Baqali, from Morocco, the post of second deputy chairman, and Tariq Al Moemeni, from Jordan, the post of third deputy chairman. Mohammad Yusuf from the UAE and Abdullah Al Hajlan, from Saudi Arabia, were selected as the fourth and fifth deputy chairmen respectively.

The new board chose Hashemi Nouiri, from Tunisia, as its consultant, Abdul Wahab Al Zaighilat, from Jordan, as head of the freedoms committee and Adnan Al Rashed, from Kuwait, as head of the resource development committee.
