Manama: Kuwait is to introduce a new traffic law next year in a bid to reduce violations and accidents, a senior official has said.
The new law includes doubling the prison term for motorists committing serious offences and reducing the number of driving licenses given to expatriates, Kuwaiti daily Arab Times reported.
Shaikh Ahmad Al Hmoud, the interior minister, said that the amendments to the law were aimed at confronting the violators and not increasing fines.
The presence of traffic patrols will be boosted on roads and at traffic lights to monitor the traffic movement and arrest the violators, particularly those who jump red lights, he said.
Kuwait has one of the highest traffic accidents rate in the region and officials have been pushing for a stricter application of the law to deter violations.
